SST Motorsports proudly offers many different styles and brands of SFI certified and non-certified auto racing gloves for all levels of auto racing. Our Ultra-Shield auto racing gloves are available in one and two layer options, with SFI tags on the two layer racing gloves. These are high quality auto racing gloves ideal for the professional as well as the weekend warrior. Impact auto racing gloves are only available in the two layer design, but the G4’s are the only auto racing gloves available with SFI certification. They feature a 3/4 finger joint for the most comfortable and exact fit. The non-padded wrap-around palm area and divided knuckle guard for additional comfort and abrasion resistance and an extra layer of fire-resistant material connecting the leather and your palm. The G4 auto racing gloves are SFI 3.3/5 certified as well. We also now offer the full line of Racequip auto racing gloves, and safequip auto racing gloves. The Racequip auto racing gloves are available in many different options. They come in a one layer design in certified and non-certified versions. Two layer Racequip auto racing gloves are also available with sfi certification as well as the “mod” auto racing gloves which offer a few upgrades to the basic two layer auto racing gloves.
Depending on what type of auto racing you are doing, you will need a different type or style of auto racing gloves. Different sanctioning bodies and series all have their own rules and regulations. For most classes, single layer auto racing gloves will suffice. A lot of times, a smaller local track will only require the drivers to wear all single layer racing safety equipment, while, most of the larger sanctioning bodies that have a lot more racers, will be a little more strict for their safety rules, usually requiring a minimum of double layer auto racing gloves, suits, and shoes. The NHRA and IHRA drag racing series require more from the driver’s auto racing gloves than any other sanctioning body. If the car runs an eta low enough for their requirement, the driver must have on three layer auto racing gloves. Most of the time, the drivers that have to wear this level of racing safety equipment, are not excited about it because of the thickness and bulkiness it has, but it is required for a reason, and is for the drivers own safety.
All auto racing gloves must have a label attached to them stating their SFI certification. That is if they have are certified to any level. The SFI tag shows what level of certification the auto racing gloves are of, as well as an expiration date for which they are good until. The SFI certification is what all auto racing gloves and racing safety products must meet. The manufacturers use this to prove a products performance, and sanctioning bodies for racing adopted them into their rules eventually. At the end of the day the consumer benefits from this, as it shows a high level of performance and quality from the racing gloves and other products. The SFI foundation started in 1963 when a group of racing safety products manufacturers developed the organization known as the Speed Equipment Manufacturers Association, or SEMA. The organizers deemed the main reasoning of the association was to be the development of auto racing gloves, and other racing safety products specs for use by the suppliers of products used in auto racing.
In the early SEMA days, engineers struggled with the development of different product specs. Many "unknowns" faced the innovative product manufacturers in areas of styles and designs. But their desire to succeed and dedication to racers won out and it wasn't long before the specs were established and created a part of sanctioning body rule books.
In the end, if certain auto racing gloves, and racing safety products on or in a race car didn't meet SFI specs, the driver could be denied racing in an event. A specs series for the performance racing safety products industry was born and has carried on for many years as a result of the willpower of the SEMA founders.
