OUR EXPERIENCE AND KNOW HOW

At SST Motorsports we take our custom painted helmets seriously.   SST Motorsports has been doing custom painted helmets since early in 2003.  All of our Airbrush Artists are professionals and have been doing custom painted helmets for over a decade.  Each of our painters has been certified and trained on the products and materials used on our custom painted helmets.

Our selection of custom painted helmets is only a small part of what we carry, but is larger and contains more variety than a lot of other companies can offer.   We offer many custom painted helmets designs that have been created by our previous customers, but most of our original schemes are from the creative imaginations of our airbrush artists.

When we first broke into the custom painted helmets scene, we only did custom painted auto racing helmets.  We have now expanded into doing not only custom painted helmets for autos, but also custom painted motorcycle helmets, custom welding helmet, custom batting helmets, custom painted mailboxes, custom painted head & neck restraints, custom painted toolboxes, and many other items as well.  We have expanded our custom painted helmets into your all around custom airbrushing store.  We specialize in all types of flames, graphics, guitars, tribal designs, skeletons, skulls, lettering and pinstripes.

OUR PROCESS AND EXPERTISE

We use only top quality tools, materials and airbrushes on our custom painted helmets.  Airbrushes are generally classified by three characteristics. The first is the action performed by the user to trigger the paint flow while the second is the device for feeding the paint into the airbrush and the third is the point at which the paint and air mixes. A simple airbrush works with a singleaction mechanism where the compression of a trigger results in paint and air flowing into the airbrush and the atomized paint being expelled onto the target surface of the custom painted helmets.  This is generally how cheaper airbrushes and spray guns tend to be made.  Dual action or double action airbrushes separate the air and paint so the user can control the amount of airflow and the ratio of paint flow through two separate mechanisms. This allows for better control and a wider variety of artistic and special effects on our custom painted helmets. This type of airbrush is more complex in design compared to a single action airbrush which is always reflected in its cost.

Each airbrush artist has their own unique style for custom painted helmets.   Airbrush style and technique is basically the freehand movement of the airbrush.  Air pressure, and the distance from the surface being Custom Airbrushed, is varied to produce a certain predictable result on a consistent basis with or without tape masking and stencils. The artists airbrush technique will vary with the style of airbrush being used on the custom painted helmets.  Dual action airbrush technique involves pressing the trigger on the top of the brush with your index finger to release the air only, and pulling it back slowly to the paint release point. The most important rule is to always begin spraying with air only and end with air only on custom painted helmets. By following this rule, a precise control of the amount of paint, line thickness, and character can be achieved. The most important airbrush stroke consistently utilized by professionals is the dagger stroke. This is a stroke which begins wide and ends as a narrow line, created by starting with the brush far from the support and moving it evenly closer as the line is drawn.  Single action airbrush technique derives its name from the fact that only 1 action is required for operation. The single action of pressing the trigger releases a fixed ratio of paint to air. Achieving different line widths requires either changing the tip and nozzle combination or else adjusting the spray volume manually between spray width changes. The most important aspect of proper single action airbrush technique is to keep the hand in motion before the trigger is pressed and after the trigger is released. This avoids the "bar bell" line on the custom painted helmets.

HOW WE CARE & PROTECT OUR PRIDE

When we start a job, the part is properly cleaned with our wax & grease remover prior to any sanding or scuffing on the custom painted helmets.  Next, the custom painted helmets are sanded down to the shell.  We don’t leave any factory paint or any other paint on the custom painted helmets so that there is no worries about it interfering with new materials that will be sprayed on.  An adhesion promoter is always used, followed by the primer on custom painted helmets.  Once the primer has been laid down, the masking for the Custom Graphics will begin.  The first layer of a graphic or a base coat will go on first, then the second layer and so on until the custom painted helmets are complete.  We always use a minimum of two clear coats on all of our custom painted helmets.  The first coat is wet sanded and buffed to remove any feeling of the lines between graphics.  We also use a speed clear which has a 3 hour drying time to avoid the extra day of waiting for the coats to cure as you would need to do with a regular clear coat.  Additional clear coating can be applied, but there is an additional charge for each coat.  When you’re ready to be different, and own that one of a kind Custom Painted Helmet that stands out from the crowd, give us a call.  We’re sure to give you what you’re looking for, with a very reasonable cost for the quality and complexity we offer on our custom painted helmets.  You won’t be disappointed with SST Motorsports custom painted helmets.

OUR PLEDGE TO THE CUSTOMER

Our painters use a wide variety of colors, and can also provide custom mixing and candy paint for custom painted helmets.  It is our top priority to satisfy the customer with outstanding quality and value.  We know that custom painted helmets are a valued investment, and when properly cared for, should last longer than the helmet itself.  That’s why we take the time, and go the extra mile to make sure that each and every job that we do receives the correct prepping procedure on all custom painted helmets.  We are an honest family owned business looking to serve you, the customer.  We do what you want, not what we think you want.

Our motto is:

“Send it in plain, get it back insane!!”
